Well, over a year after I started to look into it, the great project to screen out extraneous colors from individual category pages is complete. Now, if you are interested in screening out all colors but one while perusing Bible verses on this site, you may do so by clicking on any link to the corresponding category, category state, or category interaction. This definitely makes reading for certain ideas much easier. I hope it is helpful.

From Esther 10 to Psalm 119 — more fun with Bible statistics!

The Categorization Status page now shows the relative size of each chapter of the bible. Here are some possibly interesting factoids that I found out during this little project:

Esther chapter 10 is the shortest chapter in the Bible at 3 verses.
Of course, Psalm 119 is the longest chapter, weighing in at a whopping 176 verses.
The average number of verses in a chapter of the Bible is about 26 verses.
For you statistics geeks, the standard deviation for the number of verses per chapter in the Bible is about 13.5 (That is assuming a normal distribution, which I don’t think is the case. Weibull, maybe…)
The book of the Bible with the highest average number of verses per chapter is Luke, at about 48 verses per chapter.
On the other end of that scale, Jonah has only 12 verses per chapter.

I did this astoundingly boring bit of database work so that it would be easier to tell at a glance the chapters that are the “low hanging fruit” available for categorization. Getting lots of easy green on the Categorization Status page will help me keep some steady momentum on this project of mine called the Full Spectrum Bible.

The good folks at Code and More have wonderfully helped me in my efforts here at FSB by writing a WordPress plugin that will cut the posting time of verses by at least half. As you can see on the Categorization Status page, the “hot” colors of red, orange and yellow show that categorization hasn’t been my problem. The current dirth of the cool colors of green, blue, and purple on that page show that my bottleneck has been posting the categorizations. The new functionality on this website should increase my posting speed by at least 100%. So here comes more verses!

It took me almost four years to change my mind about this, and though I have made peace with the new arrangement it will still take time for me to get used to it. I speak of course of my decision to swap the color assignments of Nature and Market. Ever since summer of 2005 back at the home site, the Realm of the Market has been green and the Realm of Nature (originally called “Creation”) was orange. Something in the back of my head was always asking me why it was this way and vice versa, and I always answered that something with two reasons:

In America, the color green is associated with money, so why not?
I find the modern environmental movement obnoxious, so I was reluctant to give them their color of choice.

In the end, my reasons were based on my whims and predilections, without any other basis. This is silly, so the justification for the color swap are now as follows:

I believe that the United States dollar will sometime soon be collapsing like a house of cards. Since “greenback” will soon once again be a term of derision, the Realm of the Market will be given instead the color of fire, which may be more appropriate considering the power and destructiveness of that “Element”.
Seriously, it only makes sense that the Realm of Nature shold be represented by the color that can be seen almost everywhere outside of the limits of any city. So you greenies can have your precious color, though I still think that your ideas about evolution and human-caused climate change foisted upon the minds of a fallen human race are highly preposterous hoaxes.

That is all. (And really, it’s not much.)

I have categorized a few chapters worth of scripture on this site so far, and after surveying the results of this, I am convinced that being able to filter out all colors but one on a category page could be helpful for some. The first means of doing this that occurred to me was to exponentially increase the size of the style sheet to change all other styles to a neutral color on any given category page. I’ll be trying it out soon, and we’ll see if it does any good and if it is easy to implement.

I am in the process of indicating the chapters of Scripture that I have already reviewed for categorization on the Bible page. These chapters are indicated by bold italics and a very light grey background, currently. The three chapters that have already been categorized are color-coded to summarize their contents, though I’m still working out the kinks of that scheme.

Also, I am scanning in my notes on each of these chapters, and I plan to include the scans of these notes on the page for each chapter that I have already reviewed. This is going to take a little bit longer, though.

The first full chapter of the Full Spectrum Bible has been categorized, and it is appropriately the first chapter of the Bible.

While I was categorizing this chapter, I noticed something that I think is there. It looks like the three persons of the Trinity are explicitly present (if only implicitly mentioned) on each day of creation. On just about every day of the earth’s creation, there are three statements concerning God:

a command,
an execution of the command,
and a naming of what has been created and/or a statement of the goodness of that which has been created.

These things correspond with what scripture tells us about the differing roles of the three persons of the Godhead:

the Father initiates the will of God,
the Son implements the will of God,
and the Spirit communicates the will of God.

This may be something that scholars of scripture figured out a long time ago, but I just found it and think it is fascinating.

P.S. — Since this site is about color coding the words of Scripture according to a certain scheme, here’s how I indicate the thoughts above in the verses in question:

God the Father is indicated by the “God as Family” coloring,
God the Son is indicated by the “God as Self” coloring, and
God the Spirit is indicated by the “God as Neighbor” coloring.

This page gives one the ability to jump to any book or chapter in the Bible, and it will also show at a glance whatever category any given book or chapter falls into in general. That’s a pretty low resolution of course, but it should be able to give one a general idea about a given passage so that one can zoom in to the chapter or book for more detailed coverage.

The next thing to do on this page is to indicate which chapters have been reviewed for categorization. That task is currently in progress.

Well, most of the infrastructure for this website is done, so it’s time to start the great categorization project. I had been able to do about 5% of the scripture verses on the old website, but after a while, I realized that being more systematic about the initial scripture entry would allow me to do the categorization faster. So I have to start over a little bit, but I consider it more like backing up so that I can get a running start before I jump to reach the top of the wall. This space will be used to announce milestones in the project as well as any other pertinent developments.
